Konecranes wins crane order from BC Hydro
Konecranes America was selected to deliver two 575 ton turbine hall cranes and one 30 ton construction crane for an expansion project being carried at BC Hydro’s Mica generating station on the Columbia River in British Columbia, Canada.
The Mica station is one of BC Hydro’s largest generating stations. It currently operates with four generating units delivering a total output of 1805 MW.The station was designed to hold six generating units, but only four were installed when the facility was constructed in 1977. A $700- $800M expansion project will install the two remaining generating units, adding another 1000MW of power generation capacity.
The two new turbine hall cranes, designed to work in tandem to provide synchronized lifts up to 1150 tons, are the largest ever delivered by Konecranes in North America. The massive double-girder cranes are cab-operated with radio backup, spanning 76ft over the turbine hall on an 800ft existing runway. Inverter-driven and AC powered, the cranes feature a PLC-based control system that monitors a load restriction path and the control synchronization system. The cranes will operate inside an underground chamber. Access to the turbine hall is via a 400ft tunnel….Read More
ABB wins $120M order in China
Power and automation technology group ABB has won an order worth approximately $120M to engineer and supply key equipment for the Jinping-Sunan 800kV Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) power transmission project which will transport hydropower from Sichuan province in central-western China to the highly industrialized coastal area in the eastern province of Jiangsu.
The system and key equipment will be designed in close cooperation with the project developer State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and local Chinese partners, and ABB will also supply key components for both converter stations, including converter valves, the control and protection system and DC yard equipment. ABB has also been selected to supply the 800kV UHVDC transformers for both converter stations…Read More
Salini to build Africa’s largest hydro project
talian firm Salini Costruttori has signed a contract worth EUR3.35B to build the 5250MW Millennium hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia – the largest hydroelectric project in Africa.
The project, to be implemented by the Ethiopian Government through the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation, is scheduled to start delivering electricity in September 2014.
The project will be located approximately 700km north west of Addis Ababa, on the Blue Nile, in the Benishangul – Gumaz National Regional State. Construction works mainly consist of a roller compacted concrete main dam, with two powerhouses to be installed at the toe of the Dam, on the right and left banks, accommoding 10 and five Francis turbine units respectively. Other features will include a concrete lined gated spillway and a 5km long, 50m high Saddle dam, both located on the left bank.
The project will be carried out according to the “Fast Track Implementation” method, developed by Salini for the building of large hydroelectric plants, ready for immediate use. The method is based on the concurrent development of all relevant working phases, and allows a radical lowering – at least 50 % – of construction time, says the company….Read More
NYPA approves $7M in contract awards to support Niagara power project upgrade
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has announced the award of more than $7M in contracts to firms in Buffalo and Queens as part of a planned major enhancement of NYPA’s Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant (LPGP), the auxiliary facility at the Niagara Power Project, which is marking 50 years of successful operation this year.
The NYPA Board of Trustees has approved three-year contracts with Ferguson Electric Construction Co. of Buffalo and Welsbach Electric Corp. of Queens in support of the Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) Program that is scheduled to get fully underway at LPGP late next year.
“The Power Authority’s contract awards are part of the ramping up for the refurbishing of the Niagara Project’s Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant and demonstrate our continued commitment to maintaining the integrity of NYPA’s critical infrastructure,” said NYPA President and Chief Executive Officer Richard M. Kessel. “The overhaul will contribute to maximizing the efficient operation of the Niagara Project to produce low-cost electricity for Western New York, including key businesses employing tens of thousands of people. Our partnering with various New York-based contractors on the LPGP initiative will further advance the state’s economy in providing revenues for those businesses, with reliance on local union trades people in the disassembly and reassembly of equipment.”….Read More
Tata Power-SN Power Consortium wins bid for Dugar project, India
A consortium comprising Tata Power of India and Norway’s SN Power has won the contract to develop the 236MW Dugar hydroelectric project in Chenab Valley in Himachal Pradesh, India.
The project will be developed through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed and owned by the consortium. A detailed exploration and design study will be undertaken to plan and finalize the project implementation, with a pre-implementation agreement to be signed with the Directorate of Energy, Govt of Himachal Pradesh, shortly.
The run of the river scheme will primarily feed the Northern grid. It is the last project in cascade in Himachal Pradesh on the river Chandrabhaga (Chenab) and envisages a dam height of 93m with an underground cavern type powerhouse at its base.
Tata Power and SN Power, Norway entered into an exclusive partnership in 2009 to develop hydropower projects to meet the increasing energy demand in India and Nepal through the provision of clean energy….Read More

GDF Suez official: Government of Chile should amend hydro project classifications
SANTIAGO, Chile 4/18/11 (PennWell) — Chilean authorities should reform existing classifications for run-of-river hydropower projects which prevent bigger size schemes being recognized as renewable, according to Jan Flachet, regional CEO of power giant IPR-GDF Suez. ”As long as big dams, no matter the size, are not on a reservoir, they should be classed as renewable as well. They are not disturbing the course of the water, and should be considered fully environmentally friendly,” the CEO told Business News Americas. Roughly half of Chile’s existing hydro capacity is from run-of-river plants, though under regulations they are too big to be classed as renewable. Current energy laws stipulate that hydro projects over 20 MW in size do not qualify as renewable, leading several leading energy companies operating in the country to call on the government to amend the regulation. Firms say that such a move would help the country achieve its goal of achieving 20 percent of installed capacity from renewables sources by 2020…Read More
